Carrizalito : While EWB-NEU was in Honduras during 2006 ACTS brought the group to Carrizalito. This village is situated high in the hills, with no roads connecting it to the rest of the area. It takes a little over an hour to hike there from El Rosario. Carrizalito also does not have a water distribution system. The villages go to their source to do laundry and gather water for the day. Slightly above this is an area--usually surrounded by animals--where people bathe.

ACTS also introduced the group to Carlos. Carlos contracted Polio as a child and can no longer use his legs. ACTS hopes to find a way for him to be a more integral part of society.

Los Planes Project : In April 2006 EWB-NEU conducted a site assessment of Los Planes. This village is in dire need of help. Currently they do not have a working water system. The women and children must walk 15 minutes with buckets to retrieve water from streams, many of which are contaminated with e-Coli. The villagers cannot easily farm or raise animals because there is no water. This lack of food and water is a major factor in the plethora of health problems in the community where the life expectancy is only in the 40s.

El Tecuan Project : EWB-NEU implemented their first project in this village. This project improved the reliability of water service and increased the pressure to many houses along the east line. Although the pressures throughout the village have improved the distribution system is still in need of repair. It is over 20 years old and sediment has built up along the pipes. Part of El Tecuan's supply line was damaged by Hurricane Mitch. It has been repaired to some degree, but still has considerable leaks and would not be able to withstand another strong storm. EWB-NEU is in contact with the people of El Tecuan and checks in on progress in the village on each trip to the area.

SHI Biodigestor : Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) is located in the nearby village of La Habana. SHI works with the local communities to implement sustainable land-use practices that alleviate poverty by restoring ecological stability. One of the SHI projects EWB-NEU was able to see was a biogigestor at one of their guide's house. This takes in organic waste, which decomposes and generates methane gas. This gas can then be used as cooking fuel. It lasts for about two hours a day and removes the need to tend to wood burning fire at all hours of the day.
